We are seeking an established Head of 2D, to join our leadership team. Ideal applicants will have extensive visual effects management experience, having previously been instrumental in ensuring large teams deliver high-quality, VFX work. This is an exciting time to join RSP as we continue to build on existing capability, capacity and quality.

Employment period: This is a long-term position, with an immediate start.

Location: Adelaide, Australia. This position is open to Australian and international applicants. Visa and relocation support is available.

 
Position Overview

The Head of 2D is responsible for directing and monitoring wide-ranging aspects of RSP’s 2D pipeline, people and technology. Communication, fairness and adaptability will be instrumental in leading an established, high-achieving team of paint & roto artists, matte painters, compositing supervisors and compositors.

In this role you will create an environment in which the highest quality deliveries can be created across multiple projects. The Head of 2D works closely with Compositors, CG and VFX Supervisors to determine and set the technical direction and quality expectations for each show. People-wise, this role is instrumental in supporting and developing all team members. You will provide the foundation in which individuals can advance their career, while achieving work they and our clients can be proud of. Conducting reviews and interviews as well as handling team resourcing and leave requests will form part of your managerial duties.

Successful applicants will be backed by a respected credit list, having held positions of influence on top tier films. You will have extensive management experience and appreciate the value and contribution of each artist and technician, across all VFX disciplines. Financial responsibilities include providing project and departmental risk and opportunity assessments, bidding and project management guidance, resource allocation and time management.

All applicants must possess a strong eye for detail and quality. You must be flexible, decisive, inspiring and communicate your solutions with confidence and clarity. It will be essential to call upon your previous leadership and VFX experience in order to be successful in this role.

 
Responsibilities
  • Cultivate a working environment in which respect, empowerment, integrity, collaboration and quality can flourish.
  • Manage, support and supervise various 2D department disciplines including Matte Painting, Paint & Roto and Compositing.
  • Work closely with Supervisors to determine the critical paths required to execute asset and shot work.
  • Monitor the overall progress of shows, working with VFX Supervisors and Heads of Department to ensure each delivery meets time and budgetary constraints.
  • In collaboration with the Head of Production Technology and Head of 3D, develop and support tech and process based initiatives that improve productivity and outcomes without compromising on quality.
  • Work with Compositing Supervisors to determine technical approaches that ensure the internal and client goals are successfully achieved.
  • Bid new work packages in collaboration with clients, Sales, Supervisors and show Producers.
  • Work with VFX Supervisors and the Production Management team to provide comprehensive analysis and risk-assessment for prospective projects.
  • Ensure robust processes and best practice methodology is established, updated and followed to maintain consistency across all projects.
  • Communicate frequently with departments heads and production staff to maintain an ongoing awareness of project health.
  • Lead by example. Manage performance issues by consistently providing feedback. Supervise, support, mentor and develop all members of your team.
  • Work to promote a healthy, innovative work environment in which projects meet expectations on time and on budget.
 
Required skills and experience
  • Solid professional with 10+ years supervisory and leadership experience achieved on high quality visual effects projects.
  • Proven creative, strategic and project management experience.
  • Expert understanding of all aspects of the VFX pipeline and entire post-production process.
  • Expert people management, leadership and organisational skills.
  • Expert time management and prioritisation skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • First hand knowledge of industry standard software packages and applications.
  • Ability to operate with a high degree of professionalism and self control within a pressurised, time-sensitive industry.
  • Sharp tactical and creative problem solving sensibilities with a can-do mindset.
  • Visual Effects, Fine Art, Computer Science or related tertiary qualification may be required for international applicants.
