Rising Sun Pictures Honoured with 2024 Autodesk Design & Make Award for Accelerating Transformation in Media & Entertainment.

Rising Sun Pictures (RSP) has been announced as the winner of the 2024 Autodesk Design & Make Award for Accelerating Transformation in Media & Entertainment. The prestigious accolade was presented to RSP at AU 2024: The Design & Make Conference in San Diego, during an exclusive dinner ceremony on Monday, October 14.

This award recognises companies that excel in using data, collaboration, and automation technologies to enhance efficiency, fuel business growth, and deliver previously unimaginable projects. It was RSP’s innovative approach to embracing machine learning (ML), empowering artists while accelerating production processes, that garnered them this award.

RSP’s President, Jennie Zeiher, commented on the achievement "RSP has always been at the forefront of visual effects innovation. This recognition by Autodesk not only highlights our pioneering work in machine learning for visual effects but also reinforces Rising Sun Pictures stature as the global leader in this space."

In 2019, RSP collaborated with the Australian Institution of Machine Learning (AIML) to explore the use of machine learning in the VFX space. Upon the successful delivery of several initial projects, RSP formed a dedicated ML department, under the guidance of Machine Learning Specialists, Dr. John Bastian and Dr. Ben Ward. REVIZE™ is RSP’s groundbreaking machine learning-based visual effects workflow which puts the tools in the hands of the artists and seamlessly integrates with its VFX pipeline to deliver images of unparalleled quality.

Traditional face replacements in film and television often relied on expensive CGI or 2D composites, which could result in disconnected performances. REVIZE™ provides a higher-quality, and sometimes, a more cost-effective solution, and enabled RSP to execute new ML face swaps on projects like ELVIS and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Our machine learning team has since delivered cutting-edge work on over 21 projects including Deadpool and Wolverine, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, The Fall Guy and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. That team continues to expand with ML innovation at the forefront of its strategy.

REVIZE™ continues to evolve, with plans to expand its suite of tools and processes. Currently, REVIZE™ includes REVIZE™ Face and REVIZE™ Body, which have been employed for various applications, from digital twinning and facial performance manipulation to CG character replacement.

RSP’s early adoption and integration of ML technology has cemented its status as a global leader in the VFX industry, enabling the company to thrive amidst the challenges of a rapidly changing landscape.
