Rising Sun Pictures was awarded more than 160 shots for Ridley Scott’s sci-fi epic Prometheus. The brief included the film’s spectacular storm sequences where astronauts attempt to make it back to their ship before being engulfed by a ferocious maelstrom of dust and wind. The particulate matter was a combination of live and CG elements; the latter primarily consisting of larger chunks of debris. RSP simulated much of the required elements in Houdini and used that as a driver for Nuke’s particle system. The scene required extensive rig removal. The helmets worn by the crew also required careful treatment as they were reflective. As the scene was shot partially in daylight, the helmets contained reflections of crew, camera and lighting systems.
