Rising Sun Pictures created more than 170 supporting effects for Red Tails, which tells the story of the Tuskegee Airmen. The range of effects encompassed fully created environments, P40 and P51 fighter planes, cockpit interiors and American base extensions enhancements, along with complex composites, digital matte paintings, VFX elements and digital doubles. Many shots contained green screens shots from multiple camera sources that had to be integrated with live action, CG and digital elements. Working with guidance from ILM VFX Supervisors Craig Hammack and Russell Earl, the RSP team utilized cineSync to review the work and identify feedback for the next iterations. All work was delivered via secure server to ILM’s facility in San Francisco from RSP in Adelaide. The most extensive work was the base enhancement. Live action footage of the base was shot in the Czech Republic. Artists enhanced the minimal props and dressing from the set with CG tents, buildings, planes, vehicles, digital runway and crew. Matte painting enhancements were also applied to the horizon and grounds.
