For The Spirit, RSP created a fly-through of a fully CG city and tunnel environment and a CG Japanese tea room. Several shots required a stylized anime/manga look. For example, artists covered the team room in CG blood. The Spirit was shot almost entirely on green screens and is extremely visually stylized. The look was described by the filmmakers in a “visual manifesto.” RSP’s sequence departed further from reality; artists established an aesthetic that moved progressively into abstraction. Creating the CG blood that sprays across the walls in the tea room scene proved technically challenging. Creating the effect within the time and budget parameters, required a solution that didn’t involve fluids and could be applied to multiple shots. Artists ultimately developed a simple texture-based approach in Houdini.
